The World Islands is a collection of 250 to 300 small man made islands that have been shaped into the 7 continents of the world, hence the name world islands. These artificial islands are divided into four categories that will consist of private homes, estate homes, dream resorts and community islands. The world islands are located 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) off the coast of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is one of the several man made island projects that are currently underway in dubai. The world is being built by using sand dredged from the sea. It is a project by Nakheel Properties and was originally conceived by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai.
Each island of the World will range from 250,000 to 900,000 square feet in size, with 50 to 100 meters of water between each island. It will cover a total area of 9 kilometers (5.4 miles) in length and 6 kilometers (3.6 miles) in width, surrounded by an oval shaped breakwater. The reclamation of the land on the World Islands is nearly complete and ended on 10 January 2008. Now, the investors will begin constructing their developments. Most of the islands are now in place. The world will add 232km of beachfront, to Dubai's coastline.
The total cost of The World is estimated to be 14 billion USD. As for the individual islands, prices range between 15 and 50 million USD.
The World Islands will offer islands that are solely dedicated to hotel and resort development along with residential and limited commercial use. These lands are located near the marinas as an ideal location for holiday makers with intimate boutique hotels, spas and world class resorts.
The means of transportation between the islands will be by marine transport; that is the ultimate statement of privacy and exclusivity.
